José Velázquez is a distinguished leader renowned for his transformative impact on communities through innovative and strategic initiatives. As Founder and Principal of The James Lee House in Memphis, he spearheaded the restoration of this historic National Historic Site, converting it from a symbol of dormancy into a premier international luxury destination. His visionary work not only revitalized the landmark but also catalyzed a broader economic and cultural resurgence in Memphis’s Medical District.

José’s leadership extends beyond real estate into social justice and advocacy. As Executive Director of Latino Memphis, he was instrumental in launching the Tennessee Immigrant Rights Coalition (TIRC) and successfully advocating for state driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants. His collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Brandeis University on healthcare access barriers highlighted his commitment to systemic reform, setting a new standard for inclusive practices.

Nationally, his tenure as Vice President at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) showcased his ability to drive impactful initiatives. Managing relationships with nearly 300 Affiliate organizations, he supported programs serving over 6 million Latinos annually, emphasizing capacity building and community development.

José’s recent Certification in Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management from the Harvard Business School, underscores his dedication to excellence and continuous learning.
